Michael Casey is a journalist, author, researcher, and advisor with over three decades of experience across five continents, focused on the social, economic, and political impact of digital technology and globalization. He spent 18 years at The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones as a senior columnist covering global finance before serving as Chief Content Officer at CoinDesk, where he helped legitimize the cryptocurrency industry by framing cryptographic technology as essential infrastructure for a new model of trust. Under his leadership, the CoinDesk newsroom won three major journalism awards for its coverage of the FTX collapse, and he chaired the Consensus event while hosting the weekly column and podcast Money Reimagined.
Casey has authored six books on digital culture and economics, including The Age of Cryptocurrency and The Truth Machine (both co-authored with Paul Vigna), as well as works on social media, Bitcoin, blockchain, and a biography of Che Guevara. He co-founded Streambed Media to build provenance technology for digital content. He served as a Senior Advisor at MIT Media Lab’s Digital Currency Initiative and a Senior Lecturer at MIT Sloan School of Management.
Currently, he is the President and Co-Founder of the Decentralized AI Society (DAIS), an organization dedicated to building artificial intelligence on a decentralized framework to challenge centralized control over data and capital. He co-authored the March 2024 manifesto Our Biggest Fight: Reclaiming Liberty, Humanity, and Dignity in the Digital Age with Frank McCourt. Casey continues to advise startups such as Hypercycle.AI and Propy and is available for speaking engagements regarding blockchain technology, digital disruption, and the future of trust.
